History at the University of Wuppertal

The study of history allows students to acquire fundamental academic qualifications and important practical skills. The fairly open curriculum combines clear structures with a wide range of options for individual combinations. This not only allows for efficient, self-directed study, but also offers excellent opportunities to develop and pursue personal interests. We place great importance on interdisciplinary methodologies and exchange.

At Wuppertal University, we offer degrees in History as part of a combined Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Master of Education degree programme. There is also the possibility to earn combined double master's degree with two minor subjects from the field of history or in combination with another subject.

The department covers all eras from antiquity to modern history, as well as the history of science and technology, digital humanities and didactics. In teaching and research, we focus in particular on European history, the history of political thought, the epoch of humanism, and the history of science, technology, gender, and the environment.

In addition, the history of Italy in the pre-modern era is a focus that connects several periods. At the level of research, this is reflected not only in intensive exchange but also in completed and ongoing PhD programmes within the framework of cotutelle agreements between the University of Wuppertal, the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (Milan) and the Università degli Studi Di Roma ‘La Sapienza’ (Rome). There is also an ERASMUS university cooperation with the following Italian universities:
